Psychology of Espionage

Despite enhanced safeguards even the most secure programs are vulnerable to spying from within. Efforts to prevent or predict espionage and preemptively screen potential spies have proven unsatisfactory. The best predictor of future sins remains past behaviors. This lecture examines the motivation of "insider" spies and why cleared and trusted patriots become traitors. We profile traits that lead to espionage from two perspectives – academic and experiential. Numerous spies are profiled. Topics include: Decade of the Spy; espionage research; Operation Slammer; and DoD studies. Speaker: Thomas Eastwood
