Voltaire, Natural Disasters and God
Natural disasters have been in the news quite regularly in recent years: tsunamis, earthquakes, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornadoes. Much has been written in an attempt to explain the destruction and human suffering involved in these terrible calamities. We will discuss briefly three of Voltaire's philosophical tales: Micromégas, Zadig, and Candide before examining more in depth his "Poem on the Lisbon Earthquake," in which he questions God's intentions.
