The Horse
The horse has been revered, exploited, and loved throughout history. He has appeared in myths and is a symbol of wild untamed nature.   He has accompanied humans in war, hunting, working and playing.  The horse has been the trusted companion of man whether performing in battle, in the ring or on the racetrack. Throughout time painters have remained fascinated by the grace, beauty and intelligence of the horse, which has been depicted in art more than any other creature.   The horse has been presented in an endless variation: from the cave paintings in Lascaux, France about 15,000 BC, to China in the 14thcentury and then Theodore Gericault and Eugene Delacroix, both Romantics. The romantics were interested in the expression of emotion and horses provided them with one elemental example of power and speed. George Stubbs was the premier artist of English race horses, followed by America’s Remington and Russell. Picasso and Kandinsky will bring the horse full circle when the horse appears in its abstracted form.
