Art at Rest: The Still Life
The still life was important in early Asian art and in mosaics and wall paintings in Greek and Roman times. In the West, beginning with Caravaggio, the still life emerged as an important art style in 1550. A still-life is a painting containing only objects – usually flowers, fruits, dead game, ordinary household utensils, musical instruments, shells and books. Symbolic objects in the paintings were stern reminders of the natural decay of all things and a warning against the vanity of human desires. Instructor: Mimi Gallo
