Beethoven and the Piano

Over the course his of career, famed composer Ludwig van Beethoven completed 32 works for solo piano, many of which are now considered masterpieces in the genre. Known as sonatas, these pieces not only demonstrate Beethoven's most creative innovations in the piano literature, but they also influenced future composers in the writing for the instrument. This course will introduce three of Beethoven's sonatas, highlighting Beethoven's musical style while simultaneously introducing participants to Beethoven's piano works and basic terminology in discussing them. Students are encouraged, but not required, to listen to the following three Beethoven works in preparation for the course: 1.  "Pathetique Sonata"; 2. "Waldstein Sonata"; 3. "Tempest Sonata." All are easily accessible on YouTube. Instructor: Dr. Thomas Cimarusti
