British Romantic Poets: Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge
The English Romantic poets, who flourished from the 1790s through the 1830s, are little understood or appreciated today. Their work did not especially focus on romance or nature, though any writer will touch on those things. Blake, Burns, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Byron and Shelley wrote at a time when poets were no longer being as greatly esteemed as heretofore, as science and capitalism took hold in the modern world. They generally rejected traditional politics and religion, preferring their own perceptions and values. They left us great writing and many lines and phrases which have found a permanent place in our discourse, such as “water, water everywhere, nor any drop to drink,” “auld lang syne” that we sing every New Year’s Eve, and “beauty is truth, truth beauty – that is all ye know on earth, and all ye need to know.” Instructor: Dr. William Miller
