Succeeding his great grandfather Louis XIV at the age of 5, Louis XV, "the well beloved", enjoyed a long, eventful reign that included patronage of Mozart, Boucher and Gragonard, and the style and influence of Mme. de Pompadour, as well as the disaster of the 7 Years War.  Louis XV has been dismissed by some historians as a lazy, ineffectual king whose self-indulgent rule spawned the discontent leading to the revolution.   This course will investigate the colorful lifestyle of his court and the consequences of the extravagances of his reign.
