Masters of the String Quartet

Next to the symphony, the string quartet became one of the most esteemed musical genres in the 18th and 19th-century Europe, so much so that Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven eagerly sought to perfect the genre, completing over 100 string quartets over the course of their careers. What led these musical giants to compose in this more intimate genre? And why were the Viennese so obsessed with it? In preparation for this course, participants are encouraged to listen to Haydn’s “String Quartet in E flat” (the Joke), Mozart’s “String Quartet in C major,” (the Dissonance), and Beethoven’s monumental “String Quartet in C# minor” (Op.131, No. 14). Instructor: Dr. Thomas Cimarusti
