Athens, as capital of Attica, would lead the Aegean city states against both the Persians and central European barbarians for centuries. The safety and security of the city allowed its citizens to focus on the 'liberal arts' of its day - forming the core of western civilization in fine arts, architecture, literature, science and math. In one of Plato's dialogs, Cratylus, he gives the etymology of Athena's name based on the view of the ancient Athenians regarding the mind of the gods. The name of Athens in Ancient Greek was Athḗnai (Ἀθῆναι). The Acropolis hill, so called the "Sacred Rock" of Athens, is the most important site of the city. The Acropolis became a monument on the World Heritage list in 1987. Instructor: Dr. Steven Derfler
