Live footage of Paris' beloved Notre Dame Cathedral in flames riveted viewers around the
world in April 2019. The investigation about the causes of the fire are ongoing, as are the
controversies and ideas of how to rebuild this 800-year-old Gothic landmark. The ideas range
from very traditional to wildly imaginative. It's not the first time Notre Dame has faced
challenges, yet it has always endured. Many other churches have been the victims of fires,
earthquakes and wars. This lecture will look not only at Notre Dame's history but at several
other cathedrals, tracing their disasters and rebirths.
