The Renaissance is considered a primary inflection point in the history of Western art. To understand the powerful impact that Renaissance artists had on the development of art history, it is important to understand what preceded it. This lecture will offer a visual feast for the eye as we explore highlights of Romanesque and Gothic architecture, painting and sculpture, and track the evolution of the European arts through the Medieval period. We will take a sumptuous visual tour of the great Gothic Cathedrals and explore some of the artists whose genius and innovations provided the pathway to the Italian Renaissance. Finally, we will discuss the features that establish Gothic and Renaissance art to be among the greatest artistic achievements in the history of the world. Instructor: James Pagliaro
