This lecture explores the dramatic economic growth of Salem, MA, especially from 1776 to the War of 1812, from a modest fishing town to dominant maritime hub for American trade in the Indian Ocean. The instructor explains how in 1800 Salem became the nation's richest city per capita due primarily to flourishing trade with Indian port cities of Calcutta, Bombay and Madras and its ability to satisfy burgeoning demand for pepper from plantations on the northwest coast of Sumatra. The lecturer will also compare and contrast the rival trading patterns of Salem and Boston, as both sought fortune in China and the East Indies. Instructor: Michael Ranieri
