RA: The Twilight Zone: Real and Imagined Failures
Examples and causes of engineering failures of aircraft, ships, bridges and load-bearing structures are introduced and discussed. It is shown that most structural failures are traced to combinations of excessive loads, presence of preexisting defects, and inadequate material toughness. A newly created video recording eerily connects works of fiction with real events associated with structural failures; in one instance, the "failure" of a fictional airliner is compared with the failure of the Comet, the first commercial jet aircraft. In addition, the events surrounding the sinking of the fictional Titan passenger liner are compared with the actual catastrophic failure of the Titanic cruise liner. Instructor: Dr. Richard Hertzberg
