RA:Introduction to Music of the Romantic Period
Introduction to Music of the Romantic Period
Tuesday, March 19th, 2:00 pm – 3:30 pm
Instructor: Dr. Thomas Cimarusti, $20 per person
The period from 1800-1900 witnessed the creativity of some of the most sublime compositions in the history of music. Composers such as Beethoven, Schubert, Chopin, Brahms, Rossini and Tchaikovsky produced numerous works that will forever remain in the canon of Western Art Music. This lecture will introduce participants to the Romantic Period by offering a definition of “romanticism” in music and the cultural forces that shaped the Romantic movement. Before the start of class, participants are encouraged (but not required) to listen to: Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in E fl (2nd movement); Chopin’s Mazurka Op. 7, No. 1; Rossini’s Una voce poco fa from the Barber of Seville, and Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique (4th movement). All excerpts can easily be found on YouTube. Students may also select a favorite Romantic composition/composer to facilitate class discussion.
