President Harry S. Truman called Eleanor Roosevelt "The First Lady of the World." The longest-serving First Lady of the United States was a political figure in her own right, a diplomat and an activist. Born into one of America's most prominent families, Eleanor's childhood was filled with unhappiness and lack of self-assurance. Her complicated marriage to her fifth cousin Franklin Delano Roosevelt brought her into the political sphere where she found fulfillment in activities focused on economic, social, racial justice. According to some, she became more popular than her husband—and according to J. Edgar Hoover was considered "dangerous." A panel presentation will explore Eleanor's life in her youth and early marriage; her White House years; and her post-White House years; and describe her enduring influence.
