Fixing the Florida Everglades, Once and for All

Description: In late Summer 2014 and again in February 2016, billions of gallons of polluted water were discharged from Lake Okeechobee to the Gulf of Mexico and Atlantic Ocean estuaries. The obvious solution to this pollution is to allow water from the lake to flow south as it historically did before water management was imposed. But that would cause polluted water to flow to the much treasured Florida Everglades. Instead, a sustainable solution to the water quality issue could be the creation of 100,000 acres or more of new wetlands in the southern edge of the Everglades Agricultural Area south of Lake Okeechobee to complement the existing 60,000 acres of wetlands.

Designed for: Members interested in water resource issues affecting Southwest Florida and its treasured “River of Grass”

Facilitator: Bill Mitsch, PhD (Professor Emeritus, The Ohio State University, and Director of The Everglades Wetland Research Park, FGCU)
