Though sometimes called "the female Lawrence of Arabia,"Gertrude Bell deserves recognition for her many contributions as a writer, traveler, linguist, archaeologist, Arabist, and possibly even a spy. She influenced British imperial policy based on her extensive knowledge of Syria, Mesopotamia, Asia Minor and Arabia, and aided the British in arriving at Baghdad, providing them with her maps of Iraq based on her extensive travels throughout the Arab world. Recent films (including the 2015 film with Nicole Kidman) and writings attempt to restore the "Queen of the Desert" to a justified place of prominence in British history.
