Joséphine Bonaparte, Napoléon's "Rose of Martinique"

Marie Josèphe Rose Tascher de La Pagerie—Joséphine—Empress of France, the unforgettable woman born in Martinique whose name would be Napoleon's final word upon his deathbed, was loved by many and hated by many, imprisoned during France's Reign of Terror, then crowned Empress of France by Napoléon, before her forced divorce from him for failure to produce his heir. Yet she is remembered today as the ancestor of the present heads of the royal houses of Belgium, Denmark, Luxembourg, Norway, and Sweden, through her children with her first husband, Alexandre de Beauharnais, as well as for her legacy with roses in the New World and Europe, for her fashion, and powers of persuasion with heads of state. This was and is a woman worth knowing!
