Marie Antoinette, The Queen You Don't Know
Wednesday, November 18th
10:00 am - 11:30 am
Ruthmarie Mitsch

Most of us associate "Let them eat cake" (she never said it) with a self-absorbed queen who lived in grand isolation, pretending to be a simple shepherdess at her "Little Hamlet," all the while oblivious to or unconcerned about the people and events bubbling up in Paris and the provinces. This session will explore the childhood of Marie Antoinette, her relationship with Louis XV, her husband's grandfather, and with her husband Louis XVI, a royal as unprepared as she was to assume the reins of monarchy during the tempestuous late eighteenth century. While her flaws have been well publicized, it is high time to revisit the story of this queen to acknowledge admirable facets of her character that have been obliterated by history, but certainly witnessed as she ascended the steps to the guillotine.
