Hooks & Needles

This presentation focuses on "Traditional" Rug Hooking which dates back to the Vikings. Rug Hooking made its way to New England in the early 19th century. Originally known as a "craft of poverty" it is now often referred to as "painting with wool."  The earliest hook rugs served as floor mats, hearth rugs and lap rugs for carriages and sleds. Attendees will learn about the origins of rug hooking, different techniques, materials and styles of hooking. They will also have an opportunity to hook a few loops!

Quilting comes from the Latin word for Quilt is Culcita (kool.kee.ta) meaning a mattress, pillow, or cushion. I'm not a history buff so I Googled the history of quilting and found it can be traced back to at least to medieval times.  Most of us have also seen pictures of early American women working in quilting bees and often using old clothing as their fabric.  Barb DuPont's interest began in 1990.  After trying different crafts such as crewel work, cross stitch, latch-hook, macrame, & knitting, I found that, for me, working with fabric and quilting provided the most creativity, relaxation, and joy.
