THE SLOW FOOD MOVEMENT
When McDonald's opened in 1986 on the Spanish Steps in Rome, Carlo Petrini, an Italian food and wine critic, rallied against the culture of fast food that was eating away at Italy's long and celebrated gastronomic traditions. The Slow Food Movement encourages locally grown foods and the celebration of the local history and traditions and advocates against the globalization of agriculture, emphasizing that "everyone has the right to good, clean, and fair food."  Giorgio, from the Piedmont in Italy, is familiar with the founder of the movement and will bring his personal imprint to the discussion.
