TIC: Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night: A Holistic Universe of Awe & Majesty
Vincent van Gogh's Starry Night: A Holistic Universe of Awe and Majesty
The focus of the lecture will be to set Van Gogh's life, character, and spiritual emptiness in the period that followed the most exciting time in history, when the worldview of astronomy/cosmology was eternally affected by the Renaissance, the Protestant and Catholic reformation, the scientific revolution, and the period of the Enlightenment. Most importantly, we will study van Gogh's most famous painting of Starry Night and his emotional, philosophical, scientific insights, and theological beliefs behind this painting. The lecture will also include discussion of his life-long relationships with his brother, Theo, and his friend and fellow impressionist, Gauguin. Additionally, several of his other paintings will be shown, along with Hubble photos of the cosmos, which when shown with expressive thought, bring incredible insight into the relationship between art, faith, reason, and nature.
