What I Fought For: Memoirs of an Environmental Professor
Professor Mitsch will present his 50-year career as an environmental scientist and engineer, from the first Earth Day in 1970 until now, with the last 47 years as a professor in 4 different universities—IIT, Louisville, The Ohio State University, and FGCU. He will present case studies involving wetlands, water quality, and politics, and how difficult it is to apply science in controversial environmental issues such as river management, wetland drainage, Everglades restoration, and legal definitions of "waters of the United States" (WOTUS).The "fights" are symbolic struggles against ignorance, complacency, and more banal forces such as bureaucracy, peer pressure, difficult bosses, and lack of immediate fiscal support. Sometimes good outcomes result from having persistence.
Facilitator: William J. Mitsch, Ph.D., Eminent Scholar, Endowed Chair, and Professor, Everglades Wetland Research Park, Florida Gulf Coast University
