Hitler, the Holocaust, what did the world know and do?

In 1933, Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany.  This began his ascent to ultimate leader -- Fuehrer -- of Germany's third post-unification 'Reich.'   The cornerstone of Hitler's policies was antisemitism, formalized judicially in the 1935 Nuremberg Laws and culminating in the 'Final Solution' formulated at the 1942 Wannsee Conference.   Hitler's goal from the very beginning of his political career was the total extermination of the Jews.  He was able to marshall 20th century industrial efficiency to achieve a sizeable portion of that planned mass murder.  But only his methods were modern:  His antisemitic hate had a long malignant history -- and it is with us yet, waiting for economic and political uncertainty to bring its scapegoating evil to the fore.
